The goals of the university/careers guidance programme at Charter are:

      - All students receive personal advice and help in deciding their future study/career goals

      - All students who wish to apply to university receive advice that allows them to make informed decisions about university choices

      - All students who wish to apply to university receive individualised support that allows them to write effective applications

      - All students receive offers of places from universities that match both their academic profile and other criteria they may set for themselves

      - Students receive timely advice that allows them to make good subject option choices in both Years 9 & 11

University guidance is offered to all students at Charter on an ongoing basis generally starting from Year 9.

Year 9 Students are made aware of the future roadmap of decision making leading up university applications in their final two years. Guidance is given to students in their IGCSE option choices ensuring that their options support their possible future choices of university study and profession. Students begin to think, in very general terms about what they might like to study at university in order to help them make option choices. Parents are invited to attend a coffee morning to explore these issues.

Year 11 Part of the term 1 homeroom programme is devoted to thinking about university options in a more detailed way than previously. Students are encouraged to think carefully about what and where they may want to study after Charter, prior to the annual university fair that they attend from Y11. They are given guidance on the kinds of things (and their importance) that make for a strong application so they can start planning and preparing.

Advice is given on option choices.

Parents are invited to attend a coffee morning to explore these issues.

Year 12 Through the PBL course, students start to plan with a lot more focus on where and what they want to study and how to write compelling applications. Students are strongly encouraged to start the application process in the second half of Year 12 and are given detailed and personalised advice on what they need to do

Year 13 A major focus of the first term of the PBL course is ensuring that students meet application deadlines. Detailed and individualised advice is given and personal statements and essays are reviewed and redrafted multiple times.
